On May 18, 2011, John Campbell Jr., son of John Campbell Sr. and Constance Williams 

Campbell (South Lumberton Jr. Sr.High School Class of '66) became the first African-American 

to graduate Valedictorian, from North Carolina State University, in its history. He graduated May 

14, 2011, from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Prior to attending NCSU Campbell 

earned the distinction of being the first black student to graduate valedictorian from Lumberton 

Senior High School in 2007.
