St. Madeline Sophie Catholic School
In 1942, the establishment of St. Madeline Sophie Catholic School opened its doors to serve black students, in grades 1 thru 8. The  black catholic school played a central role in the educational growth of its students and remained operational from 1949 to 1966. During its operation, the school served as a feeder for J.H. Hayswood High School and South Lumberton Jr. Sr. High School.

In the late 1960's, integration and consolidation of the two existing "separate but equal" catholic schools, resulted in the St. Madeline Sophie Catholic School being renamed St. Francis de Sales.  It closed its doors in 1966.
