W. H. KNUCKLES ELEMENTARY
W. H. Knuckles Elementary School was originally named Thompson Institute. Thompson Institute, named after Rev. A. H. Thomspon, one of  the oldest ministers of the Lumberton River Association. Prior to the establishment of the school, the black community had to utilize a decrepit church building to educate their children. With the building of a new church, the school was housed within its confines. Other structures were erected around the church giving the area a village appearance, inclusive of a small school campus, which became known asThompson Institute. Rev. D. J. Avera was elected as the first principal and he is credited with laying the foundaton for future success of the school, following his tenure. Professor W.H. Knuckles, from the Theological Department of Shaw University, was elected Principal to succeed Rev. Avera.  Rev Knuckles was instrumental in expanding the small school campus from one building to three buildings, with a faculty of five. His untiring and unwavering efforts ensured that all students were afforded a quality educaion, thus enhancing the quality of life for the community as a whole.
